Darryl was one of my first acting teachers in the 1970s at the Debbie Reynolds Dance Studios in North Hollywood. He was also the star of one of the first "grown-up" shows I saw as a kid -- George M! at the Colonial Theatre in Boston. He told our class a story I've always loved. He was performing in summer stock in a three character play co-starring Joan Hackett and Betsy Von Furstenberg. Darryl spoke quite highly of Joan as an actress (and he didn’t speak quite highly about everyone). However, at a matinee early in the run, Joan, for whatever reason, was apparently not projecting. An audience member called out, “Louder!” As Darryl described it, “Joan being Joan, she got softer.” Then, another audience member called out, “Yes, louder, we can’t hear you!” At this point, Joan walked off the stage. Shortly thereafter, Betsy followed suit. Poor Darryl was left alone onstage to try and improvise a conclusion to the play. Now the question was, what to do about a curtain call. Backstage, Joan said she was not going back out there. So Darryl went out to tepid applause. Betsy came out to even more tepid applause. Then Betsy looks out at the audience and screams, “Louder, you sons of bitches, louder!” This, of course, was followed by a stampede to the box office demanding refunds. I have very fond memories of Darryl. RIP
