The Wilma's win is richly deserved. They are, and have been throughout their history, unlike any other theater company operating in Philadelphia. The international perspective they introduced to the local scene alone is worth celebrating. I have a feeling the recent success of FAT HAM is at least partially responsible for the timing of this award, but however they came to be chosen, it's worthwhile.

Unfortunately, the shrinking of theater reviewing in Philadelphia mirrors a larger trend throughout the country. Broad Street Review, the outlet you mention, is the only publication that reviews local theater with any regularity. TheaterMania has occasionally published some regional reviews lately, but not with any predictable regularity. When John Timpane -- the longtime arts editor of the Inquirer, who really understood Philly theater at all levels -- took a buyout in 2019, coverage started going downhill, and that was only exacerbated by the pandemic. It's hard to believe that just a few years ago, the Inky had a regular stable of freelance critics, and most if not all shows got reviewed.
