In schools, yes. But high-profile productions (the Roundabout in 2009, for instance) can seek permission to change things. As I mentioned above, a lot of productions now use the film title song (that may be an option for amateur productions as well) - I know productions that have used Albert's song " A Giant Step" as well. There are a few other options that may or may not be available for general production.

Also, as I mentioned in my other post, the rental version probably comes from the first national tour, which made some topical line changes, etc. (That's not uncommon to happen, with a lot of shows.) And the orchestration is thinned down a bit also.
