I'd never compare myself to Sondheim, but, perhaps, like him, I will contradict myself from time to time. He took apparent delight in seeing his works adapted to film (despite making comments like this.) And, I, despite, by and large feeling this way, can't deny there are some film musicals I absolutely treasure.

I think a difference between what you're describing -- comparing dialogue to a musical number -- is that many (not all of them, obviously) musical numbers are a moment in time stretched out into four or five minutes of music. In a film, that moment could be captured just by the way the camera moves, a smart edit, or, yes, one or two lines of dialogue. In the theatre, it feels almost 'natural' to revel in those moments during those musical numbers.

And, to answer your question, I'm a child of the 80s and early 90s. My parents raised me on some film musicals like King & I and I had my own childhood favorites like, predictably, Annie.
