I've always thought it was a mistake to cut Cliff's ''Why Should I Wake Up?'' It's his only solo in ''Cabaret.''
Ostensibly, ''Cabaret'' is HIS show, Berlin as seen through his eyes. ''I Am a Camera,'' right? But he barely sings at all. I think he's now down to half of ''Perfectly Marelous'' and maybe a one-line reprise of another song near the end. Cliff is one of the most thankless leading-man roles in musical theater.
By contrast, each revival seems to give Sally and the Emcee MORE and MORE to sing, which I think throws the show's balance out of whack. |
