"This begs the question-- what exactly is great? I am sincerely glad you enjoyed it. But a "great book?" Was it especially well written? Did it do anything that the movie didn't already do? Was there excellent (new) dialogue or character development? I think not. So, enjoyable, sure. But not great."

I agree that BTTF is not a "great" musical by any means, certainly in the traditional sense. Nonetheless, approximately 10,000 people each and every week are seeing it, and it's not hard to believe that the large majority of those that are are finding it incredibly entertaining, and in some instances thrilling. And I know many families that have seen it with kids between 10 and 12 seeing their first Broadway show, and they've absolutely loved it.

So yes, I wouldn't describe it as a great musical. But I'd also describe it as having deserved a Tony nomination as one of the Best Musicals of the Year. I don't undervalue the importance of a show that can keep me smiling for 2 1/2 hours, especially in the world we live in today.
