I didn't say they should dictate merit, I wonder if they should dictate eligibility to compete for the "big leagues" of awards.

The financial investment and probable loss for a commercial production is so different. At at certain point it hardly seems different than letting off-broadway plays be eligible.

There is a stranglehold culturally in NYC by non-profits. If the ones who produce collectively what seems like soo much of a given season can run each play for a month only... it just seems like such a fractured Broadway. There's such little possibility of seeing most of this great theater unless you live in the city. I don't think that's what the Tonys wants to tell people. But most shows that close in a month now aren't because they utterly flopped and didn't have audiences or investors for more than 4-6 weeks, it's because the "non-profit" producing entities that put them up scheduled them for only that long.

It's just frustrating, and sad. Meh productions at regional theaters have longer runs.
