This is far from an ideal version of Vanya but I enjoyed several of the performances and had no problem with Steve Carell. I thought when his Vanya finally confronts the professor was a powerful scene. I found Anika Noni Rose was an enchanting and devious Elena. You really believed both Vanya and the doctor would be smitten with her. Alison Pill is giving the most traditional Chekhov acting performance and her final scene with Vanya as they go over bills is so moving.
William Jackson Harper is a very good actor but he seems too young for the part. Alfred Molina is fine as the pompous professor and I wish there were more of him. I thought Mia Katigbak added some welcome funny moments as one of the servants.
I did find it odd to have a Miles Davis album on a phonograph. |
