| It doesn’t help matters when Steve Carell is giving no real performance at all; he’s just being Steve Carell. He looks as if he wandered in from a Judd Apatow comedy. I’ve seen many Vanyas since Nicol Williamson in ‘72, but Carell goes right to the bottom of the list. IMHO, Reed Birney remains at the top in a Sam Gold production hardly anyone remembers. Merritt Wever as Sonya was truly memorable in the same production. Their last scene was remarkable. |
