For me, the context is so strongly expressed that I never had any doubt about the meaning of "I do", from the first time I heard the song, which could have been when I was sitting in the orchestra in a junior high school production of the show. I fell in love with this song then and it's always been in my top 5 of all R&H songs, though I admit more for the music than the lyrics.
