There are nine-year olds- though probably not many- who are equipped to enjoy serious adult shows. I don't know whether ultimately that's a good thing or not, but when I was nine I certainly wouldn't have been yelling "Get me out of here!"
Sounds like the kid at TOMMY was reacting to the same loud, unmodulated din that the Variety critic was reacting to more than the uncomfortable themes.
