Did you see either the American or English television productions? The latter, although arguably better overall, was not complete, but the American production was complete or pretty close to complete, except for replacing "Ordinary Couple" with "Something Good," and perhaps altering the lead-in dialogue a bit.

In the show, Elsa is not a baroness. She is a wealthy woman who has recently become president of a corporation. She may be a widow, but it's not made clear. Is she also called Elsa in the film? I think so but I don't know the film that well. On imdb, Eleanor Parker is listed as playing The Baroness.

I'm not sure that the Captain feels revulsion toward Elsa, but I suppose it's up to the actor. Certainly he feels disappointed by her. She breaks off the engagement, rather gracefully, anticipating that if she doesn't, the Captain will. I seem to think that the Baroness also anticipates the ending of their relationship in the film and breaks it off herself, although I'm not sure as it's been too long since I've seen it.

I do think it's important that Elsa and Max be charming people. Elsa states her belief that the Nazis will not invade Austria, as they have promised. We never know how she reacts when they do invade Austria.
