At the Savoy it somehow managed to be both absolutely dazzling and, yes, gimmicky and overdone - but that's true of a lot of things in this production. It's often thrilling, but it's intellectually sloppy. Very little in it has been thought through as much as it should have been, and there are a few cringeworthy self-referential touches that don't add anything at all, although the basic idea of taking the show out of a period setting and placing it in a more abstract framwork absolutely is not a problem.

The title song sequence is a technical tour-de-force, and jaw-dropping to watch - at least, it was at the Savoy, and I assume they must have factored it in when choosing a venue for Broadway - but it's also pointless. Or rather, the point is that we watch Norma watching Joe on the screen, and there are simpler, less gimmicky ways to show us she's become obsessed with him. But that's a recurring theme with Jamie Lloyd's staging in this production, very little of which is as fresh and original as it thinks it is: it's tremendously entertaining to watch, but it doesn't quite add up to a coherent statement about the material. As I said, it's intellectually sloppy.
