| Christeene gave a powerful concert dedicated to the life and spirit of Sinead O’Connor last night at the City Winery. Christeene appeared on the drag scene around fifteen years ago as a kind of Cajun gutter-glitter queen with a raunchy repertoire and voice that had a gravelly purr to it. Since then she has grown in stature as a live performer. She now manifests as a witchy High Priestess mistress of rituals. And her vocal and performance style is a mix of Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper with some odd and refined trilling and other startling vocal techniques, both camp and classical. The volume was alas too loud for this old queen and I fled a little after the petite powerhouse Peaches did a Sinead duet with Christeene. But I was happy to have been a part of this Walpurgisnacht on the Hudson and look forward to Christeene’s next visit. |
