I strongly disagree that Illinoise is "near perfect." Certainly not as a work of musical theater - since it has no songs and no dialogue, and a not easily detected storyline. I read every word in the program and still didn't get the whole narrative. (And you should never assume people read programs.) For some of the vignettes, like John Wayne Gacy and Superman, I'm not sure what was being said.

This is a dance piece. If you went to see a dance company and this is what they performed, you probably wouldn't think twice, like, "Hm, this seems more like theater than dance." I'm quite surprised by people declaring it the best new musical of the season (or of all time, since so many people can't seem to enjoy something without it being the greatest thing ever)...if I went in without having heard that, it might not have occurred to me that Illinoise is musical theater.

Sure, there's room for various forms on Broadway, and of course there's a lot of talent on the Illinoise stage.
But I think a lot of people - and not just tour groups from middle America - when they go to a Broadway musical, they want to see a musical, with singing & dialogue & a plot they can follow without difficulty. (So before you tell everyone you come in contact with it's the greatest show ever and they should see it, consider if they might be one of those people.)

Also, while the choreography has its charms, it doesn't seem to vary all that much throughout the piece.

I have not seen The Outsiders yet, so no comment there.
