Groff is also 38, which gives him some more perspective in playing this character at older ages, whereas Jim Walton was only 25, playing his character from middle age going backward. Plus Walton was thrust into the role under some duress -- as a understudy taking over the role after the original actor was dismissed, and in a production where there were audience walkouts and a lot of negative word of mouth going around. This current production, on the contrary, when cast, was given sufficient rehearsal time, with a more stable show structure settled upon, and got good feedback from the start.
