I noticed a large African-American presence in the CIBC theatre last night, particularly groups of mature, matronly black women. Also, a surprising number of young black (presumably) gay couples.

Renowned black artist Esther Jones originated the character of Betty Boop and was hugely popular in the nightclubs of Chicago and New York in the late 20's and early 30's. Jasmine Amy Rogers did seem to evoke Baby Esther IMO.

My African-American partner's mother and aunts (one of whom is 103 and still lives in Chicago) were huge fans of the Betty Boop shorts.
