I saw the first preview and I had a LOT of fun! But so far, it's not much more than that. Though, not for lack of trying: marvelous designs, incredible dancing, fabulous orchestrations and incredible performances, including a truly star-making turn in the title role. All of which Jerry Mitchell uses to almost make you forget that the *content* is just ok. The book is clunky and the score merely serviceable. I'm curious to go back to see what changes but it really made me long to see what any of the other tunesmiths attached the long-aborning project might have cooked up instead.
