I think a few of those 1956 shows were revivals.

I’m surprised there wasn’t a Shakespeare in the mix. Back in those days, broadway created the jukebox songs that were popular in the mainstream.

We may not be in a golden age, but 13 new musicals (i suspect Hell’s Kitchen will be 14) this season is pretty remarkable even if several are jukebox. A lot of money is still following into funding broadway shows even though less than a quarter will recoup.
