|I have never found LaChiusa to be Sondheimian at all, despite the accusation since he began his career -- it is the go-to thing to say about anyone who doesn't write old fashioned style tunes or broadway-pop tunes, or really for anyone who tries anything. LaChiusa is nothing like Sondheim outside of an attempt to find interesting stories to tell in interesting way, through music and lyrics.
Also he's been writing this musical since at least, one would think, a year before it went up in San Diego, which was over 2 whole years ago.
He also worked closely with Graciela on this show about her life, that she's directed too, so how the story is told will have to do with her ideas too, and I don't think anyone would consider her way of thinking theatrically as Sondheimian, and she's been working in musical theater since the mid 60s, and obviously grew up in Argentina in the 40s/50s, so her range of influences also has no tie to Sondheim specifically. LaChiusa also has said he did not grow up on Sondheim, and I think his work shows many influences but Sondheim isn't the one I'd go to.
I know this was mainly about the deer and I made it a bigger thing, but just thinking out loud.
