During the time in 1999 when Sondheim was working on Saturday Night, I attended a lecture that he gave at Truman College on the north side of Chicago. A student in the audience asked Steve about expanding Evening Primrose for the stage. He replied that it was a self-contained musical that worked well just the way it was written (for TV), and he had no interest in going back to it.

He also made the comment that there had never been any serious commercial interest in such a project, nor had there ever been anyone willing to come up with the necessary financing that would be required to develop Evening Primrose into a full-length stage musical. I don't remember his exact words, but he definitely dismissed the possibility as having no merit.
