''Sondheim was quoted by someone as saying that Harnick was his favorite.''

While watching a video with snippets from Harnick's memorial, I heard that quoted and thought: ''I've never seen that quoted anywhere.'' Has anyone else?

The only time I remember Sondheim mentioning Harnick was a story he once told about Harnick's hesitant reaction to his lyric of ''I Feel Pretty.''

If Harnick was indeed Sondheim's favorite lyricist, I would've loved to have heard Sondheim's thoughts on ''Fiorello!,'' ''She Loves Me,'' ''Fiddler on the Roof,'' etc.

When Sondheim put out his 2010 collection of lyrics, ''Finishing the Hat,'' he included essays on lyricists he admired (i.e., Hammerstein, Loesser, Porter) and ones he didn't adore (i.e., Hart, Gershwin). Apparently, Sondheim diplomatically chose to steer clear of commenting on his contemporaries. But i kinda wish he wrote an addendum, perhaps to be published after his death, about them. What did Sondheim think of the lyrics of Harnick, Fred Ebb, Jerry Herman, Stephen Schwartz, etc.? I'm sure he would've had some fascinating insights.
