I think it's sort of foolhardy to name a single composer/lyricist as being the best when there have been so many different eras in Broadway history.

George M. Cohan was very prominent from 1900 -- 1930. Irving Berlin and Cole Porter were certainly dominant from 1930 to about 1955. Frank Loesser should not be overlooked from the late 40's through the early 60's along with Harold Rome.

From the mid-60's to the early 90's Sondheim had his greatest success, but we should also recognize the contributions of Jerry Herman, Steven Schwartz, and Maury Yeston.

I feel more comfortable listing a group of composer/lyricists rather than choosing just one.
