Howard Miller takes a look at Hell's Kitchen at Public Theater:

New York City in the 1990s was just beginning to emerge from a low point in its history, at least so far as the 20th century goes, a period marked by violent lawlessness, a rocketing plague of crack cocaine addiction, and the still-burning flame of the ongoing AIDS epidemic. Times Square, in particular, was considered an unsafe mix of crime, sex shops, and prostitution. But things were starting to improve, if not fast enough for the mother of a 17-year-old girl named Ali, the center of the new Alicia Keys musical Hell's Kitchen, opening tonight at the Public Theater.
