I found Durang hit or miss also. Just like portenopete posted, some plays like "Sister Mary Ignatius" had me laughing until my sides ached, but sometimes I just found his work tediously trying way too hard to be funny. I music directed a production of "Adrift In Macao" some years back and was really dismayed at how bad and forced much of the material seemed.
That said, I'm glad he never compromised on what he wrote - it may not have always worked, but at least he dared to write it. |
