Thanks, Alan. I do seem to recall in one of the Broadway anthology books years ago a photo of Verdon in that ballet where she was, I believe, being held nearly upside down by, presumably a john in the brothel, and Verdon's boobs appeared to have fallen significantly out of her dress, so this appears to have been a pretty steamy ballet. Maybe that partial nudity was (or wasn't) intentional, but then again, didn't Rise Stevens get some notoriety for a boob (or two) popping out of her costume on at least one occasion when she did Carmen? Anna Russell's famous quip about Wagner's "Ring" aside ("I'm not making this up, you know!"), I did hear this story many years ago. Was it intentional about Verdon's Anna and Stevens' Carmen? Hmm. Stevens was the most famous Carmen of the 20th Century (though her appearance performing as Carmen in the Bing Crosby film "Going My Way" helped a lot, too). Verdon's acting and overall performance as Anna Christie was compared favorably to Greta Garbo, and she won her 3rd Tony (in a tie with Thelma Ritter), which I'm sure you know, but others may not.
