The infamous re-opening of Broadway the fall of 2021 probably changed my response to standbys and understudies forever. How quickly we forget the era of daily testing and masking, actors arriving at theaters only to be sent home (or the equivalent, specific protocols varied). We seldom saw the fully advertised company that unique season. In the same week, I saw Jennifer Blood go on for Mare Winningham and - in a cast with covers going on for most of the leads at one Saturday matinee - Christopher Innvar go on for Greg Kinnear, who never actually got to do a week of Mockingbird. They both stunned me, Innvar revealing aspects of Atticus no one else excavated. I'm not suggesting that we shouldn't see the promised actors. But the industry's rich wealth of talent is manifest in these replacements, and it's become a kind of ongoing exercise in actor appreciation to watch covers score and soar.
