| Truly surprised to see his nomination. I haven't seen the performance (I've seen clips but I won't judge on those). But I have not heard much praise for anything in this show, including his performance, and it's a show most people dismiss as a mediocre at best musical there to have special effects and impressive scenic design. I'm sure he's giving a dedicated entertaining performance, I just didn't expect it to get one of the slots for a Tony nom in a very crowded season. And yes there were many other deserving actors giving excellent performances, who either don't have a Tony yet or don't even have a nomination yet. Having a Tony certainly doesn't and shouldn't count against you, but also... However I think the even bigger surprise for me was seeing Appropriate get a COSTUMES nomination... utterly baffling. Surely thoughtful, well done costumes... but they are modern day street/life clothes for like 7 people... this shouldn't have even been in the conversation for this award, let alone when the designer was nominated for not one but two other shows this year... truly baffling. |
