In a play, respecting the author's intent involves presenting their narrative as intended, whether or not it includes stock characters, 'old-fashioned' ideas, or traditional storytelling conventions. Authors have the creative license to explore any subject matter uniquely. Labeling something as woke (or anti-woke!) is simply name-calling. While some may advocate for adhering to familiar tropes, it's essential to understand that authors often use theater to address issues close to their hearts, including racial inequality, women's rights, misogyny, and countless other hot topics. By embracing social commentary within theater, we honor the author's freedom of expression and pave the way for essential discussions and societal reflection. While ensuring faithfulness to the author's vision is essential, acknowledging their agency to challenge outdated tropes enriches the theatrical experience and promotes artistic innovation. Ultimately, it's up to the audience to decide if they resonate with the perspective presented. You don't have to like a show, but you can't fault a person for creating the show they want to make.
