Thanks for checking that Wayman. It does seem like the Tony nominators were trying to make some kind of point. It's coming back to me now - I was especially confused about Chris McCarrell, because he was technically eligible, and it looked really silly to only have a single nominee. It's as if the nominating committee wanted to be able to say they didn't just nominate everyone who was eligible, but then it became the fact that Tveit's win will always have an asterisk. Had I been on the committee I would have voted to nominate him for that reason alone. (And I do remember him being good - I just found the show overall was much more charming when it was in the Lortel and didn't have all those big technical elements.)

I have been looking through the rules to see what actually happens when there are so few eligible candidates in a category, and the current rules seem to only say what happens when the candidates in a "Best Show" category are three or less. But I'm guessing maybe it's the same when an acting category has so few - it becomes a yes/no vote for each candidate. So I'm guessing that's what happened. It's a shame.
