Regional Reviews: Washington, D.C. 2003 Helen Hayes Award Nominations Helen Hayes Award Nominations Announced on March 10th. Mitchell and Ripley Garner Double Nominations The nominations for the 19th Annual Helen Hayes Awards were announced Monday, March 10th at a reception held at the Canadian Embassy. Presented by Ambassador and Mrs. Michael Kergin, the reception hosted a myriad of theater professionals and enthusiasts from across the Washington, DC area. The Canadian Embassy has been an enthusiastic supporter of the DC artistic community and this is its tenth year as a patron of the Helen Hayes Awards. The Canadian Embassy also sponsors The Canadian/Washington Theatre Partnership, a program that provides an all-expense paid trip to Canada to selected Artistic Directors. The purpose of this trip is to give the recipient the opportunity to gain knowledge about Canadian theatrical culture. After being introduced by Anne Delaney, Counselor (Cultural Affairs) of the Canadian Embassy, Ambassador Kergin announced the recipients of the 2003 Canadian/Washington Theatre Partnership as being Carolyn Griffin, Artistic Director of Metro Stage and Janet Stanford, Artistic Director of Imagination Stage. Helen Hayes Awards Executive Director, Linda Levy Grossman then took the podium to announce the nominations. Before the nominations were revealed, she took some time to share some statistics. During the course of the 2002 calendar year, 70 out of the 83 professional theaters in the metro area presented 360 productions. These productions presented 9,272 performances and entertained 2,083,621 audience members. Thus, continuing Washington's standing as the second biggest theater town in the country. Washington is second only to New York City in number of seats filled. The nominations turned out to be a mix of big name endeavors such as Man of La Mancha and lesser known pieces such as Three Sistahs. Popular touring productions such as Aida and The Full Monty also received Helen Hayes nods. However, those who were hoping that the Kennedy Center's Sondheim Celebration would make a sweep will be mightily disappointed. Although, the Sondheim Celebration didn't dominate, three of its shows do appear on the nomination list several times - Sweeney Todd, which received 7 nominations, Sunday In The Park With George with 6 nominations and Company at 3 nominations. New York favorites, Brian Stokes Mitchell and Alice Ripley each garnered two nominations. Mitchell was honored for his work in Man of La Mancha (Outstanding Lead Actor, Non-Resident Production) and Sweeney Todd (Outstanding Lead Actor, Resident Musical). Ripley was recognized for her work in Company (Outstanding Supporting Actress, Resident Musical) and Tell Me On A Sunday (Outstanding Lead Actress, Resident Musical). Several other Broadway veterans captured nominations such as:Len Cariou (Copenhagen), Carol Woods (The Full Monty), Judd Hirsch (I'm Not Rappaport), John Barrowman (Company), Barbara Cook (Simply Sondheim) and Raúl Esparza (Sunday In The Park With George). Additionally, some local favorites carried away nominations. They include J. Fred Shiffman (Privates on Parade, Nancy Robinette (The Little Foxes) and Doug Brown (Hambone). The 19th Annual Helen Hayes Awards will take place on Monday, May 5th in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall. For more information, visit www.helenhayes.org.
