I was confused by this play. The leading character seems as loathsome as the supporting villain. A brilliant mind who bullies everyone he meets, is a wretched father, a corrupt businessman etc. By the second act we then are supposed to feel badly for him? Because he can no longer live in Russia and all those who he bullied have turned against him? The only thing I’ve seen that captures the black humor and dark corners of the Soviet Union is the brilliant film The Death of Stalin. This didn’t add up to much for me.
