The Tony Administration Committee actually ruled that Chris McCarrell and Kristin Stokes were eligible for Leading Actor/Actress in a Musical for ''The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical.'' The Off-Broadway incarnation of this young adult show was nominated for Best Musical by the Drama Desk and the Lucille Lortel Awards. But in a big F.U. to ''Lightning Thief,'' the Tonys apparently ditched it across the board, in an already skimpy post-COVID season.

McCarrell was charming and sang terrifically as Percy Jackson and should've been nominated alongside Aaron Tveit in ''Moulin Rouge!'' for Leading Actor in a Musical. I heard that Tveit, who knows something about being snubbed by the Tonys for ''Next to Normal'' and ''Catch Me If You Can,'' reached out to McCarrell and offered him some consolation. Also screwed: Ryan Knowles, who played multiple roles in ''Lightning Thief,'' including a riotous Hades, as if he were played by Paul Lynde. Elizebeth Vincentelli in the N.Y. Times cited Knowles' ''hilarious'' tour de force as among the ''Best Theater of 2019.''

Finally, Rob Rokicki of ''The Lightning Thief'' was the only composer-lyricist to write an original score to a Broadway book musical that year, but the Tony nominators snubbed him for Best Score, nominating instead music from 5 plays. To me, writing a bunch of songs is different than writing incidental music.
