I am shocked that Ricky Ubeda did not get nominated.

I am too. He should have definitely been nominated over Roger Bart (in my opinion).

That said, part of the problem is the Tony Admin Committee deemed him eligible in the Featured Actor category, whereas both the Drama Desk AND Outer Critics Circle deemed him eligible in the LEAD Performance categories. There are far fewer eligible Lead performers each season, and I suspect, had the Tony Admin Committee not made the decision it did, he would have been nominated.

That said, I wouldn't say "they didn't really go for" Illinoise. It got four nominations, including Best Musical. Aside from Ricky Ubeda, it wasn't really a contender in the Acting categories, nor was it eligible in Score. As for the Design categories, let's be real - a unit set will never get chosen over the bells and whistles of other shows, for example. So I think it did quite well, all things considered.

(I'm just thinking about how many people on here were POSITIVE Back to the Future would be nominated for Best Musical. I kept thinking they were crazy, and even posted to this effect at one point, before realizing there was no point in trying to convince them otherwise.)
