For whatever reason, it seems to be much easier in London for shows to come into to theatres that would otherwise be dark for short runs of a few weeks as a stop gap between one production closing and another opening. I wish that were possible in New York.
It would be great if, for example, when a show closed early. it was possible to move in a well-received regional production or off-Broadway production for a limited run until the theatre is needed for its next potentially long term booking. If a bunch of current shows close after the Tonys, as per usual, and theatres are not booked until fall with new productions, we could develop a whole new summer Broadway culture with productions filling those theatres for 6-8 weeks over the summer. I'm sure the financials would be impossible for such a thing, but it would be so much nicer than a bunch of dark theatres. |
