Mary Jane is a more recent play than Appropriate. And I know you might think 7 years vs. 11 years isn't that big of a difference, but it kind of is. Mary Jane still (barely) falls in the window of what the Tonys tend to consider "too recent" to deem a revival. There's no written rule, but precedent has indicated that if a play premiered in the last 8 years or so, they're likely to call it new, even if it's had licensed productions, etc.
