Years ago I had conversations with both Jamie Bernstein and Alan J. Lerner's daughter. I also remember the title change being discussed by Seth Rudetsky, Beth Fowler, and others in a talkback. I can't recall exactly who said what; however, the gist of all this was that Leonard Bernstein did not want 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue performed under its original title. A compromise was reached by calling any possible future productions:

A White House Cantata
Scenes from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

I just assume that this decision at some point must have been put in writing. I didn't know how else to describe it so I used the adjective "contractual". Both a written or an oral agreement may be considered a contract.
