While I understand that Back to the Future satisfies a certain demographic, many of its elements do not add up to a particularly good musical and I believe the critics were absolutely correct in their assessments of the production. Like other posters, I loved the original film, but find the songs to be at a minimum grating and superfluous extending the running time of an essentially sweet story well beyond the tolerable.

On the other hand, the technical accomplishments of FUTURE and its "wow factor" cannot be denied. Therefore my question is: Why are there songs in this production. Just tell the beloved story. There is nothing wrong with having a "a spectacle play". It has certainly worked for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. (It could still use Alan Silvestri's iconic film score and satisfy the aural dimension of the story.)
