So what exactly DOES make a musical "great"?

Or a play?

My mantra for years is that a show can be "great" enough to win a "Best---" if it does one of three things really well. And please note that this is purely subjective and a purely personal view that I don't wish to impose on anyone else.

The three things are: a) does the show transport me to a different place? b) does the show educate me about something truly important that i did not know, but in a way that's compelling and not boring or pedantic; or c) Does the show provide me with entertainment that's memorable, a "wow" factor.

So for me personally, BTTF satisfied (c) in spades. as I found it incredibly entertaining from start to finish (and what a finish!) So yes, I think it deserves a nomination for Best Musical. But having said that, I agree with the OP not only about how entertaining it was but how "the snobby, elitist critics will shut it out of the Tony's because they're pathetic snobs who couldn't createa show like it if someone put a gun to their head".
