The show had just opened, so it's actually plausible that the standby hadn't had a full put-in rehearsal.
A similar thing happened at TOMMY recently. A cast member was sent home sick an hour before curtain, and the understudy hadn't yet had a put-in rehearsal. So the curtain was held 20 minutes while he was walked through his track, mostly to insure against collisions.
