I had the honor of editing Howard Kissel, who reviewed theater for 2 decades at the N.Y. Daily News, and he was a real class act and gentleman. Howard was a wonderful writer and I never found him gratuitiously nasty in his reviews. (At one point, he also was working on writing a musical.) What's more, he was a rare critic who could admit he was wrong. Howard once called ''Sunday in the Park With George'' ''thin and lifeless.'' But he later revisited the show and wrote a reappraisal, saying he'd misjudged it. And Howard told me he got a gracious note back from Sondheim. My favorite memory of Howard: I was having a birthday cabaret party at Eighty Eight's, and I asked him if he would sing. He generously agreed. And Howard sang a lovely and lilting ''Shall I Take My Heart and Go?'' from ''Goldilocks,'' which includes lyrics by fellow critic Walter Kerr. |
