My understanding is that the version o Broadway is the version of the Paul Kerryson production at the Leicester Haymarket Theatre in 1992-3. (Maria Friedman was Mary, Evan Pappas was Charlie). That's where Gussie became a principal - and inexplicably was given an opening number for Act 2 - though 'It's a hit' is dead on what Act 2 should open with. In 2000-2001, Michael Grandage, in his terrific Donmar Warehouse revival, went back to much of the opening night version, and Gussie's new number disappeared. I have read that they didn't ask for permission to restore 'Hills of tomorrow' etc - they just did. I was confused by the new Gussie material at NYTW, and remain confused by it. The Act 2 opener is a true 'show stopper'. It stops the show cold in its track, and it takes a while for the show to get its mojo back.
