Orson’a Shadow (original production) was a remarkably witty and incisive critique of theatre artists, a la All About Eve. I’m glad people will have a chance to see it.
The play AMERICAN ROT has some drawbacks, but its focus on Abe Lincoln’s Supreme Court Chief Justice Taney and the Dred Scott decision is a great jumping-off point. I’ve been reading up about it ever since. The two actors playing modern characters with the most lines are good at inhabiting the central argument, which is a bit Shavian in itsverbosity. There’re stylized movement-and-sound pieces for the black chorus and the white. The overall slant seems a little overwrought and judging the past by what we now know, but there may not have been enough time for more nuance. There’s a specious replay of the Ferguson incident regarding Michael Brown (check out the Steeles’ documentary ‘What Killed Michael Brown’ for the ‘tea’ on that), but the play is worth watching and being made to ponder. The play sent me to read a new treatmrnt of Lincoln’s Presidency, ‘Our Ancient Faith,’ and to read all of wikpedis about Dred Scott and his wife. Deep deep story.
