Boy, I couldn't disagree more. I love ''Here Lies Love'' and ''Harmony'' and saw both shows multiple times - on Broadway and Off - and one of my very favorite things about them were David Byrne and Fatboy Slim's fun and infectious tunes and Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman's stirring songs. I guess my Tony tastes are more in line with Adam Feldman's. I'd also agree with his ''exceptional'' praise for ''Here Lies Love's'' dynamic design team: David Korins (set); Clint Ramos (costumes), Justin Townsend (lighting) and M.L. Dogg and Cody Spencer (sound). In another year, they'd sweep. To that list of Tony-caliber talents, I'd include Alex Timbers (direction) and Annie-B Parson (choreography). Plus, I'd add Arielle Jacobs (Imelda), Jose Llana (Marcos) and Conrad Ricamora (Ninoy Aquino), the triumphant trio of standouts in an astonishing all-Asian-American cast. I'll never understand why ''Here Lies Love'' opened (wrongheadedly) in the middle of last summer. I imagine it came down to the timetable and availability of the Broadway Theatre. But I'm convinced that ''Here Lies Love'' wouuld've been a big Tony contender for Best Musical ... if it had opened this spring instead. Tonys or no Tonys, ''Here Lies Love'' was one-of-a-kind, and will always be one of the best and most brilliant musicals I've ever seen on Broadway. |
