Tommy 3/20 Evening

Saw Tommy last night. Des McAnuff stood up in the Orchestra before the show started to greet the audience and announce that 4 performers were out that night with a mysterious illness. He said the 4 understudies performing that night hadn't had a chance to perform in the show yet, and that their rehearsals were scheduled to begin the following day, since this is the preview period. He was hoping he wouldn't have to stop the show at some point. The show proceeded and went off without a hitch, the understudies knew their blocking, etc. The little Tommy's, who were both understudies, were great. Musically, the show sounds great, and was not super loud, as was reported here earlier, so they possibly tweaked the sound. Visually, it's pretty cool, but I did see the 90s production, and remember it being a little more impressive, maybe cuz I was much younger. Was there a projection of the pinball lights on the theater walls? I didn't see that last night. There's a lot of interesting symbolism in the written show - it's a bit hard to pin down what Tommy is actually about, but it makes for good conversation when leaving the theater. I was hoping for something really new and edgy, but this is still basically 90s Tommy with some touches to make it newer.
