MY 20 FAVORITE SCORES
Posted by: Jorge (jorge@jorgeplace.com) 02:19 pm EST 12/25/15

If you love musicals as much as I do, you know it’s very difficult to make a list of your favorite scores. Some titles came to your mind in a blink of an eye, in my case CHICAGO, MACK & MABEL, GYPSY and FOLLIES are among the first. But when you are faced with the task of choosing 20 titles, things became a little more difficult. Which ones to choose in a list of hundreds of shows? Well, on my blog I’ve just posted a list with my 20 favorite scores. If you’re curious about my choices, follow the link.

interestingly, I found 13 of your 33 would be on my list, quickly added 2 others and think I will stop at 15!

I didn't change the number in the body -- it's more like 40 than 33.

What 2 did you add?

I mean... my top 15 would probably have to be (and i know, most of them are Sondheim, sue me):

Sunday in the Park with George
Sweeney Todd
Follies
West Side Story
Candide
A Little Night Music
Pacific Overtures
Cabaret
Chicago
Fiddler on the Roof
Carousel
Caroline or Change
South Pacific
Merrily We Roll Along
The Fantasticks (? maybe?)

well of your 15 I only had 7. My other two are Hamilton and American Idiot (and yes I know many people don't consider it a score but I do).

Well, the way I'm feeling today, these would be mine:

The Boys from Syracuse
Candide
Do Re Mi
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
The Golden Apple
Golden Boy
Into the Woods
The King and I
Kismet
Kiss Me, Kate
The Light In the Piazza
Little Me
A Little Night Music
The Most Happy Fella
My Fair Lady
On A Clear Day You Can See Forever
Pacific Overtures
She Loves Me
Street Scene
Sweeney Todd

About 15 of these would be invariable with me; the other five or so might change slightly, from day to day, depending on my mood. Mind you, these aren't necessarily the 20 shows I think are necessarily "the best" or "the greatest," but the 20 scores I think bear up to repeated listening over many years. And there are many, many others I think are nearly as much fun as these.

Interesting choices, Jorge! My own list would tend more to original cast recordings over revivals and would have more Bock and Harnick and less Herman. I suspect, from your selections, you have a sunny disposish!
