ON YOUR FEET! Last Night

I won a $40 lottery seat to ON YOUR FEET! last night. I found the show only OK-ish; I just can't jump on the fervent fan bandwagon. I realize no one's life is all exuberance and good times -- especially when one is recovering from a terrible accident -- but the succession of slow and laborious numbers and scenes dragged down my enjoyment. The dancing and singing in the energetic, upbeat numbers are top notch, as was the acting by the three leads (yes, I 'm including the always delightful Andrea Burns as Gloria Estefan's mom) -- with a partial exception. Josh Segarra was earnest but seems to have been directed to speak so softly and with such a thick Cuban accent that at times he is indecipherable. (Does Emilio Estefan speak like that?). Even if he does, audibility must be considered.

For those interested, my lottery seat was Row G in the mezz, three seats from a side aisle. Because my knee had chosen a very inopportune time to swell up, I changed seats to a center right aisle, a few rows down, at intermission. There were a good number of available seats in the mezz, probably because of people busy with holiday prep and plans.

I had the same seat on Monday night. Like you I felt there were a few slow numbers that seemed labored in act II. I had a good time watching the energetic cast and am glad I caught this musical. Josh Segarra had a thick accent that didn't bother me but I know it does turn off some others. The show really appeals to a wide range audience and I know tourists will be attracted to it.

I think josh was picked for his very good looks and not his singing, I kept thinking during the show, aren't there loads of Latinos dying for a chance on Broadway with a better voice. I thought it might be the night I saw him, but others have posted similar issues. But he is really nice on the eyes. Andrea burns did have a large part and was terrific.

Do a few searches on YouTube and you'll find lots of interviews with Emilio.

The choice of voice/accent baffled me.

And got in the way of understanding much of his dialog.

But the choice is deliberate as Josh Segarra has a very clear voice with no heavy accent.

I'm surprised Gloria and Emilio have let this direction stand,

I liked his husky voice for some reason AND he got to deliver that stirring rant that got enormous applause when I saw it.

Not memorable as Jersey Boys but very entertaining and some great numbers...
