NEW COLORS HERE NOT COLORBLIND-FRIENDLY
Posted by: DOTD 12:50 am EST 12/24/15

I am red/green colorblind. The new colors here at ALL THAT CHAT are not colorblind-friendly. I can't differentiate a read from an unread posting. Please reconsider your color choices, dear Talkin' Broadway.

Those two colors are the standard browser default colors, and have been so for almost twenty years. In other words, if a programmer puts a link on a page, without any other instructions, it will be blue until it's visited, after which it will be purple.

But yes, the web designers can choose other colors without difficulty, just a few lines will do it.

If you use Chrome, you might find the linked browser extension useful.

Wouldn't the previous visited/unvisited links color choices have worked with the new design?
And those colors transferred over?

I haven't seen blue/purple used for links in quite some time. :-)

And the old links

They were red to blue. But the rest of the site has always been default. It may turn out that we will go with red to blue - we wanted to get input first, since the other colors were from 1997.

It has nothing to do with any decisions we made, but when I go to Google I see (a shade of) blue and purple.

I think the difference is in the font - the non-bold font on Google is much easier on the eye, IMO. I'm ok with the colors, though if many others are not, I'm sure I'll be ok with whatever you decide to change them to. ;-)

I really wasn't comparing our links to Google - just replying to the comment:

I don't notice the blue and purple of the Google search engine result links. Their font is also different. I am not a typographer or whatever, but their font is so much easier on the eyes.

The fact that a website would leave the visited/unvisited links at defaults of blue/purple is very odd.

The web browsers I use default to blue (unvisited) and purple (visited), but generally website designers override the colors.

I am guessing most users are accustomed to the website designer overriding the web browser's default settings by choosing colors that are more compatible with the rest of the website.

I can change the link colors in Firefox and Opera but not in Chrome (I don't see where to do that).

All I'm saying is Google uses blue and purple. At least that's all I see.

We didn't like the link colors the designers chose (fine for the content pages, but not for ATC).

And, even though we thought maybe link colors could be updated after almost 18 years, we didn't want to make a decision for thousands of highly opinionated people. So we're getting feedback. For people who can't wait a week, at least some have an option.

(And I think there's an extension for link color changes in Chrome.)

"highly opinionated people" Why Ann, wherever would you get a notion like that? Thanks for always keeping your yule cool.

I guess I am just very surprised that the designers chose to leave the links at default colors, because that is what they look like to me.

Web Design

I'm no star web-designer, but I've built sites. In the nearly 2 decades since I started, I have never heard of a web designer leaving the audience at the mercy of some default browser behavior, involving their having to get under the hood themselves to adjust for their preference.

Web design is about choices, and they should be made by the designer, not left to the limited web-design and browser-alteration capabilities of the large audience. The quality of the designer is measured by how well he/she decides on the best look for the site, its purpose, and its audience.

Bold face is a notorious no-no in web-design as a basic font, and two notably contrasting colors are always recommended for unclicked and clicked links.

I have to conclude that the designer here knows very little about web design, and the responsibilities that come with the field.

Hopefully the numerous comments here will persuade the site to re-design the main page in an easy-to-read, non-bold font, with a color 100% suited to the content (it's just a news bulletin board), with an equally easy-to-read-and-detect color for visited links – in other words, something like the way it was.

As a web professional myself...

I, too, have been creating web sites since there was a web. (I make my living as a programmer, principal languages SQL, C#, C++, and Python.) Though I think you are being too harsh, the only statement with which I actually disagree is this:

I have never heard of a web designer leaving the audience at the mercy of some default browser behavior

There is a major strand in design thought which suggests that the more you allow the browser to control the layout, the better. The benefits of this approach became clear when mobile devices swarmed the field: plain-vanilla sites still looked good on phones without any user intervention, while highly 'designed' sites were unusable at any resolution but the one chosen by the designer.

The current compromise, 'responsive' design, is a significant improvement, but it's much more complicated than either of the old approaches, and takes longer to get right. That's clearly what's going on here.

I'm still holding off my comments on the design until next week, as requested.

That is considerate of you. I hope that others would do that, and would also email their concerns, also as requested.

I'd be shocked if they didn't make some additional changes in the near future, but I'd also hope that we could allow the volunteer staff here to have their holidays. Maybe we could all cool our jets for just a few days - even (especially?) if that means stepping away from the computer for a little while.

If the Germans and English could have a Christmas truce in 1914, maybe the critics and armchair designers could try the same.

I strongly agree with the displeasure about the new design and especially the colors. The poster above is quite articulate about design and I find it unnecessary and rather irresponsible to suggest that users have to adjust preferences themselves. I'm sure that there are others here besides me who don't know how to do that and have no interest in figuring it out. This does not look better or serve the site well. Please fix it.
