re reviving the golden hits (and this applies likewise to creating new shows with old titles and even to jukebox shows)--
the first focus for some/most producers in selecting shows (and I think this is true here) is raising money, not selling tickets. It is worth remembering that 110 in the Shade (among other shows you could cite) was a non-profit production. Unknown quantities require high profile stars to close the deal, and unlike plays that can recoup in limited runs with Pacino even when they are awful, musicals need leads who will devote much more time to the enterprise (and there are few people who populate both circles in that Venn diagram.) |
