One problem with getting older is it feels as if the time between revivals has been astonishingly short (maybe fairly in the case of "Spring Awakening," but that sounds like such a different take on the original that it makes its own argument for a shorter time between productions--even if the box office may not indicate that paying audiences agree). When I read that the last revival of FOR (Molina) began in 2004, I am amazed at how quickly a decade passes at my age. My first Broadway show was the original "Elephant Man" in 1979--I saw the revival in 2002. Missed the recent one. While there was less time between Crudup and Cooper than between Anglim and Crudup, I can well imagine that there are new audiences for some shows every decade or so. I suppose part of the issue for those of us who attend Broadway shows regularly (and I do less regularly than many on the board, as I live 4 hours away) is that we do hunger for new shows or revivals of less frequently produced shows--getting to see "110 in the Shade" on Broadway in the revival with McDonald was a rare treat. I was, contrary to popular belief, a tot when Inga Swenson played Lizzie--I only got to hear her magnificent work on the LP (and then CD). I first saw the show in an NU production in 1976 when Debbie Tranelli was a memorable (if impossibly beautiful) Lizzie, so I was so glad to see a professional production. But I doubt it could be a successful money-making run these days, so I suppose we simply have to enjoy the golden hits, done for new generations. I'm glad I got to see Channing as Lorelei Lee and Dolly Levi in less brilliant productions than the originals, so hurrah for revivals.
